In search of the Near Eastern origins of Hekate, we encounter a far older figure, one who straddles heaven and underworld, life and death, mercy and wrath.

The goddess Gula rises from the sands of the ancient Near East, born at the crossroads of two great cultures, Sumer and Elam, emerging from the Trans-Tigris region, a mysterious land known for its chthonic and serpentine cults. She bears many names: Bau, Nintinugga, Ninisina, Azugallatu, Belet Balati. Each is a distinct facet of the Many-Faced Goddess and a reflection of her immense power and influence.

More than a goddess of healing, she was Guardian of Thresholds, Mistress of Curses, Mother of Resurrection, the Mighty She-Goat of Heaven, and a figure of divine judgment whose rites shaped both temple medicine and royal authority. Her sacred animals were dogs. Among her symbols were serpents and stars.

But she was more than that.

She is not just goddess of the sickbed, the herb, and the dog. She is Eve in the Garden, Mary at the tomb, Magdalene in mourning. She is the holy woman at the threshold, guardian of both birth and death. Her titles, Goddess of the Rib, Mother of the Holy City, Queen of the Heavens, echo across Mesopotamia and into the very fabric of biblical scripture, refracted in the sacred myths of Hebrew and Christian traditions.

Through rigorous scholarship, visionary prose, and a complete cycle of rituals, hymns, and prayers, this book restores the goddess to her rightful place as mother of healing and divine justice, a chthonic queen crowned in stars, a forgotten Titaness whose breath once stirred nations.

But this is more than history. It is a grimoire, a living compendium of ritual and devotion. Within these pages lies a full cycle of rites drawn from her many epithets. Rituals call upon her as Holy Mother, Horned One, Serpentess, and Sovereign.

These include initiations, votive dedications, ecstatic prayers, and offerings that realign the seeker with her enduring mysteries. The book culminates in the Rite of Hekate Bau, a syncretic act of power and devotion invoking the unity of Gula, Bau, Nintinugga, and Hekate into a transcendent Goddess of healing, sorcery, and resurrection.

Gula was never merely a goddess of healing. She is a storm goddess of bones and breath, a judge of kings and demons, the flame beneath the crossroads, and the veiled mother of stars. Her myths, rites, and names remain etched into the foundations of magic, medicine, and ritual power.
